Anjori Mitra and advocacy group Grounded Kiwis successfully challenge aspects of New Zealand’s Covid-related border restrictions
The Firm is proud to announce that associate Anjori Mitra is part of an advocacy group, Grounded Kiwis, which successfully challenged aspects of New Zealand’s Covid-related border restrictions (Grounded Kiwis Group Incorporated v Minister of Health). The challenged restrictions included requirements that New Zealanders enter a “lottery” in order to obtain a place in a government operated quarantine facility before they could enter New Zealand, even though demand for places in quarantine far outstripped supply. Grounded Kiwis argued that many New Zealanders experienced substantial delays in returning to New Zealand, even in emergency situations, which caused significant suffering. In a decision issued this week, the High Court of New Zealand found for Grounded Kiwis and held that aspects of New Zealand’s border restrictions unlawfully infringed on New Zealanders’ right to enter New Zealand.
As well as being admitted as an attorney in New York, Anjori is admitted as a barrister and solicitor of the High Court of New Zealand. The Firm congratulates her and everyone else who participated in bringing this important lawsuit and obtaining the groundbreaking decision which resulted. Anjori’s involvement with this lawsuit indicates her ongoing commitment to human rights and social justice, both in New York and internationally.
